Since I'm sure you've already decided to hire me, that means that we'll be working together! I put together this page so you can get to know a little bit more about me outside of work, because that's the same me who's at work.
Great question! I love to laugh, often at myself, and generally attempt to enjoy life. Rather than give you some long essay that you might feel guilted into reading (bleh!), I've made some sections (with pictures!) so that you can click on the ones that interest you and skip over the ones that don't.
Believe it or not, I actually really love what I do. Teaching and empowering people to leverage better technology is a hard part of your brain to turn off. Over the years I've helped friends, colleagues, and neighbors with any combination of the following (and more):
Career Shifts into Power Platform
Website and Portfolio Building
Small business automation assistance
Conversations usually start with a "you know you could do that for free right?" and before I know it, I'm giving a lesson. The light on someone's face when they figure out they really can do something that felt out of reach before is always worth it.
A website I empowered members of a local community to build, which continues to evolve and support those neighbors to this day!
Facing what borders on a financial literacy crisis, especially in the rural southern United States, I do what I can to spread financial literacy and good budgeting practices. This is predominately done by leveraging tools I've built for myself, and making them free and accessible to others. I'm frequently helping people seeking advice on better budgeting, and most notably have shared countless time an open source automation for tracking shared spending throughout the month, against a shared budget number.
*I am not a financial advisor
Use this map to check out all the places I've been! I'm passionate about learning from other cultures. Whether it's cuisine, language, customs, there's just so much the world can teach us! I love learning, so I jump at any opportunity to learn something new about a new place.
I've been fascinated with language since childhood, and am always looking to learn some new phrase. Language learning has fostered so many relationships in my life that I consider it to be a core discipline in my personal foundation. I'm usually a lot better at speaking than comprehension or writing, but I always give it a shot!
As a proud member of the Tennessee Ornithological Society, I do own a birdfeeder. Pictured below are some common birds in my area that I enjoy. You may be thinking to yourself, "wow, these are incredible wildlife photos, Corey must be really talented". I assure you, that would be an inaccurate assumption. I did not take any of the pictures of these birds, because I am terrible at taking pictures of birds, but I do LOOK at them all the time and this is what they look like.
*Pictured from left to right: Great Blue Heron, Osprey, Carolina Wren, Tufted Titmouse, White-eyed Vireo
I'm a huge fan of nature and botanicals, so building and maintaining landscaped gardens has to be my favorite hobby. I do what I can to protect and preserve local species via pollinator gardens. I'm passionate about sustainability and developing symbiotic outdoor spaces with nature, and a lot of my projects are completed using reclaimed materials. Topics I'm interested in range from permaculture, stormwater retention, ponds, to terraced gardening and more.
*Like with most of my hobbies, I'm not very good at any of this, but I enjoy it!
I was on the sailing team in college, and have been in love with the sport ever since. I usually have at least some dinky sailboat at any given time. I usually can't get enough of being on the water, so when I'm not able to sail, you can typically find me on a canoe somewhere paddling out in some back stream or river. I am always down to talk about boats.
*If you sail too, I will crew your boat with you no questions asked, because it's likely much nicer than mine
I've always been a gearhead, and jump at the opportunity to go for a drive. These days I try to make it down to Road Atlanta at least every year or two and watch some proper racing. I'm a fan of rally and GT3 style racing, but can get into the weeds on just about any topic. Let's hit a cars and coffee! (but you can keep the coffee, I'm more of a tea guy)
I build a lot of stuff! I've stripped an apartment down to the studs before and rebuilt, I've built decks, outdoor stairways, coffee tables, benches, library shelves, you name it! If you can pay somebody to build it, I probably spent twice as much to build it in 3 times as long, but I love it. I'm pretty versed in 3D CAD and love sketching up ideas.
I'm fascinated by interesting architecture and enjoy soaking in all that I can when I travel. In the same vein, interior and specifically furniture design is a niche interest of mine. You can probably expect me stopping to take a picture of an interesting bench or chair. Designs by the likes of George Nelson or Charles and Ray Eames always excite me, but I'm typically enticed by anything interesting or notable. I guess I really just love sitting down.
